It was a good weekend to be a Camelback fan, watching them roll over Scottsdale on Saturday. The first half was all Camelback, where the team dominated, both in the forwards and in the backs. Things slowed down a little in the second half as blanket substitutions were made to ensure playing time for all. It bodes well for the upcoming season, as Scottsdale was last year's AZ Division II Champion. The team will have a little break to get ready for the upcoming season over the holidays, but will be heading to Las Vegas on January 13 to take on the Sin City Irish.
Forward play was impressive over the weekend with Shawn Johnson & Patrick dominating in the lineouts and in the open field. The tight 5 controlled the scrumdowns for most of the game taking a few against the head, as well as driving the opposition for several yards at a time. Phat Pat & Will Swartz provided the pushing for those scrums with Eric Anderson(Axle), George Moya(Giggles), and Mike Johnson keeping things low and in control up front. Loose play was better than usual with Camelback fitness looking impressive.
In the backline, Zachary Tait & Adam Steuter, seemed to have recovered from their vaginal injuries to combine for an impressive 17 & a half minutes of play. However, as Tait modestly points out, "Yeah, but we scored da most points in dat amount a time!" I had no argument against the well spoken NAU grads, and they went even further later on that evening mending things up at the Kaddy Korner. Other backline highlights came from Brockett "the Boot" with a couple of penalty kicks, and Seth & Five-O combining for some good combination running. Jonny Hanson was even able to set aside his housekeeping duties for the day and make the game. He was a little rusty from having missed the Wild West Fest, but nonetheless managed to have a mediocre game.
Several players came in during the course of the game as substitutes, and all played well, but unfortunately exhausted themselves for the second game which Camelback ended up losing to Scottsdale's B's. However, they all played strong games and will undoubtedly be providing wins for the second side in weeks to come. In addition, there are sure to be many 1st side players feeling the competition to start.
On the social side of things, Camelback will probably not be having the 12 Pubs of Christmas in downtown Phoenix for a little while so that the dust can settle from Saturday night's events. |
