Fred attended Live Oak High School in Morgan Hill Calif; played left offensive guard for 3 seasons. Entered Stanford as a freshman in Fall of ’67 and he considered frosh football with the “Indians” for one day. His father told him “If you sign up for football you’ll lose your scholarship” (meaning his financial support). In the Spring ’69 he was selected to be the Stanford Rugby team manager which he undertook for two seasons.
With his B.S. and two graduate degress Fred departed Stanford in the Spring of ’74 and started work for Garrett AiResearch in Phoenix on May 29, 1974. In November ’74 Fred’s roommate recommended he consider playing rugby with a new club team that practiced at East High School. The Phoenix Rugby Club was populated by a really good group of local gents many of Jean and Fred were both “newcomers” to Phoenix and became traveling partners for out-of-town matches attending their first tournament in Tucson Fall ’74. Jean was a scrum-half and Fred was a hooker.
Fred was also nuts about flying and throughout his Rugby-playing years he and Jean would occasionally fly a light plane to distant matches; usually San Diego and Santa Barbara. In those early years with both Phoenix and Camelback Rugby clubs there were several players who were avid aviators. Truman Young was an air-tanker pilot based at Luke who tragically lost his life in an air refueling mission. Joe Bulmer was a stellar wing-forward who went on to become #3 with the Air Force Thunderbirds for two seasons. Ken Bright was a Navy fighter jock.
Phoenix Rugby Club (PRC) played every Saturday and was VERY robust, in fact, PRC was so well endowed with players that “A” and “B” sides were considered when multiple matches could be accommodated with scheduled opponents. Truth-be-known, Fred’s level of skill and athleticism were not “A-side” ready. After the 1977 season Jean and Fred started talking about forming an independent club. The idea was shared with key members of the Phoenix Club who gave conditional approval—that the “new club” NOT actively recruit members from PRC. This seemed a natural request but made the “going” a bit rough for the first season—finding sufficient players to field a side. Because both the Phoenix Club and the Tempe Old Devils Club had full compliments of players the “new club” found guys pretty easily. In the summer of 1978 key actions were launched for the “new club”. Jean and Fred recruited new player-candidates to join them on the “Find-a-pitch”, “Find-a-Bar”, and “Pick-a-Name” Committees. Madison Park, The Hackamore Inn, and Camelback Rugby Club emerged.
The 1978 season was a struggle but Jean was able to find friends and former Shadow Mountain High School football players while Fred actively recruited guys from his workplace “Garrett AiResearch”. Some of those Garrett engineers were real “finds” who had emigrated from Britain and Canada as life-long Rugby players having worked on Jet Engines at Rolls Royce, Pratt and Whitney, etc. Among the notables were Jim Gibbons, George Durkin, and Peter Morgan. By the 1979 season the team was pretty well established playing scheduled matches as a member of the Arizona Rugby Union League and participating in tournaments in Tucson, San Diego and Santa Barbara.
At the April 1980 Santa Barbara tournament Fred sustained a pretty serious shoulder injury. Recovery was fast and by Fall of 1980 he was able to resume play. Fred hung up his cleats after the 1981-1982 season at the young age of 32. Jean was best man at Fred’s wedding in 1991.

In 1979 2 friends of mine, John Mooney and Jim Lueayicks, told me about a great new game they had found, I was hooked. I shared the flanker and 8 man positions with Crash, Bobby Stewart and Pat Regalia. Bo Swartz asked me to play Hooker with Kevin Faber and Cliff Harrington as props. This pairing paid off with the Arizona 2nd Division Championship in April 1986.
In 1989, work took Kevin and I to Las Vegas, where we played 7’s for Pat Roach. Off to Portland for 2 years played with the Pigs, stiff competition from Seahawks, Beach Dogs and a couple of trips into Canada. In 1991, we returned to Vegas and played 9 more years. We went to 4 Club Championships with Vegas, best finish was 6th. Never played with better mates than the guys from Camelback, Portland and Las Vegas.
Kevin played mostly Prop for 20 years from 1982-2001. Over that time he played for Camelback RFC, Tempe RFC, Portland RFC, and Las Vegas RFC. He was a Perennial Select side player and captained many times. He even coached for two years and won Arizona Division multiple times with both Tempe and Las Vegas. Kevin and his wife, Londa, have lived in the Las Vegas Area for about 30 years. He is a General Contractor and enjoys family, his grandkids, riding his Harley, and the Raiders!

I was born in to a rugby family and started playing at age 6 for his local club, Wirral RUFC, a club that I am still associated with and is an honorary Vice President. I earned representative schoolboy honors playing for my county, Cheshire, and also representing the North of England U18 side – playing alongside the likes of Tony Underwood and against future world cup winners Neil Back and Martin Johnson.
During my university years I continued to play for Wirral, and the senior Cheshire team. A job move post university saw a step up in terms of rugby, playing for Bedford RUFC from 1991 to 1994. Bedford are in the second league in English Rugby, and in the early 90’swe were regularly playing against the likes of Harlequins, Leicester Tigers, Saracens etc… I was fortunate enough to play with and against some world class players, probably the most notable was a stint playing alongside Craig Inness, who played multiple times for the All Blacks.
I moved to the US in 1994 and took a break from rugby due to work commitments, but a chance meeting with Mark Speeding led me to Camelback in 1997, and I had the good fortune to be a part of a great team, going on to an unbeaten season in the late 90s. Again work got in the way and I took another extended break before playing in an alumni game in 2009 got the juices flowing, and luckily the younger boys accepted me in to the team. I still pay occassionally for Old Southwest, but for the past team years most of my involvement has been on the coaching side. My wife and I organized and ran a high school team, and then in 2018 I transitioned to helping coach at ASU – a role I still hold.
I consider mysefl very fortunate to have been born in to this wonderful game. IT has had such a postive impact on my life and the friendships I have made are the strongest bonds of any that I hold. While Wirral will always be my home club, Camelback is my home away from home :)
Pat Roach started playing in Sydney in juniors 1964 Balmain, played President cup lower grade, asked to play in 2nd division with my brother Phil. Played for northern for many years transferred to Wenty played and also played in Illawarra league country very tough played a total of pro for around 17 seasons as halfback,10 and at ens of pro CAREER was a lock in RUGBY league, always loved RUGBY union but ,wanted to change the STYLE so, moved to United States coached 1980 Unlv, ,then senior team BEFORE we moved to Phoenix Arizona then coached Scottsdale blues ,select teams before coaching camelback after a GREAT coach Bo Swartz retired…
